Term: Ultraviolet (radiation)

Definition:
Ultraviolet radiation encompasses the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (EM) with wavelengths shorter than those within the visible spectrum. Ultraviolet radiation is commonly subdivided into "near" and "far," with these descriptors referring to the relative distance or proximity to the visible spectrum. The wavelengths comprising near ultraviolet radiation fall in a range closer to those of the visible spectrum than radiation described as far ultraviolet radiation. Extending beyond far ultraviolet radiation is the range of the electromagnetic spectrum categorized as X-Ray radiation.
