Term: Densitometer

Definition:
A device used to measure the amount of light reflected or transmitted by an object represented as density. The less the light is reflected or transmitted by an object, the higher its density. A transmission densitometer is used which measures the optical density of transparent materials such as negatives or slides while a a reflection densitometer measures the light that is reflected back from the surface of an object such as a photographic print. Densitometers are available to measure both reflectance and transmittance with some models limited to black and white measures and some capable of measuring color. Color measurements with densitometers are limited to simple color models such as RGB or CMYK. More sophisticated measures of color and spectral data are obtained with a colorimeter, spectrophotometer or spectrodensitometer.
