Term: Data rate

Definition:
The number of bits that are conveyed or processed per unit of time, most often (but not exclusively) employed when discussing time-based media like sound or video. Often expressed in terms of kilobits per second (kbit/s or kbps, 10 to the third power), megabits per second (Mbit/s or Mbps, 10 to the sixth power), or gigabits per second (Gbit/s or Gbps, 10 to the 9th power).
