Sub-Groups

Recorded Sound

This subgroup is drafting a broad set of guidelines that pertain to the reformatting of historical sound recordings and exploring the issues associated with the receipt of born digital content. Since the field of audio preservation is relatively mature, this subgroup is able to draw on important work done by other recent projects, for example, the Engineers Roundtables sponsored by the National Recording Preservation Board, the guidelines from the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives, the metadata standards being developed by the Audio Engineering Society, and the final report from the Sound Directions project carried out by Indiana and Harvard Universities. The subgroup is identifying preservation elements that are not addressed in those documents and plans to develop information or tools that will fill the gaps.

Documents and reports from this subgroup will reported in the normal stream from the Audio-Visual Digitization Guidelines Working Group as a whole.

Moving Image

This subgroup will identify, explore, and develop ideas and tools that pertain to key issues in the reformatting of historical video recordings and motion picture film. For the reformatting of video recordings, one such issue is the identification and thorough documentation of potential target formats for digital-file-oriented approaches. In this arena, there are promising "working" solutions that will benefit from careful documentation, thereby increasing their standardization. For motion picture film, the subgroup will track emerging specifications from the industry, notably work being carried out by the Science and Technology Council of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. A preliminary analysis suggests that these specifications will be a prerequisite to a thoroughgoing specification for digital-file-form reformatting of historical film, especially for works in color. As those specifications take shape, the federal agencies subgroup will draft a "meanwhile" guideline: what are the best approaches for reformatting motion picture film before the new specifications have been drafted? It is worth noting that the field of digital-file-based moving-image reformatting is not as mature as its cohorts for still images and sound recordings. For this reason, this subgroup does not anticipate drafting a comprehensive sets of guidelines in the near term.

Documents and reports from this subgroup will reported in the normal stream from the Audio-Visual Digitization Guidelines Working Group as a whole.

EMBEDDED METADATA

Members of the Audio-Visual Digitization Guidelines Working Group participate in this subgroup. Embedded Metadata subgroup information is provided in the Still Image section of this Web site.

TECHNICAL METADATA

The subgroup spans the two Working Groups: Audio-Visual and Still Image, and is concerned with the identification, collection, and use of technical metadata for audio recordings, still images, and moving images. The subgroup will begin by exploring the roles played by technical metadata within federal agencies. This exploration will lead to comparative studies of element sets in use in various agencies, with an eye on normalizing terminology and identifying the elements that would make up a recommended core set for all agencies to use.

Documents and reports from this subgroup will reported in the normal stream from the Digitization Guidelines Initiative as a whole.
